University Council

The University Council is the governing body of the University. The Council act on behalf of the University in exercising University functions. It has control and management of University affairs and acts to uphold the interests of the University. Full functions of the Council are outlined in the Macquarie University Act 1989 (PDF).

Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is the principal body responsible for all academic matters within the University. The Senate has powers delegated by Council and acts as an advisory body by making recommendations to Council. The Senate is supported by a number of Committees that have been established to assist it in fulfilling its duties. Members of the Senate consist of ex-officio, faculty and student representatives. Senate Committees consist of both academic, general and student representatives. Administration of the Senate is performed by the Deputy Registrar's Office.

Macquarie University ACT 1989

Macquarie University was established by an act of the NSW Parliament: Macquarie University Act 1989 (PDF). This Act sets out the establishment, object and functions of the University, and the composition, powers and duties of its governing body, the University Council. The Act also specifies the University's rights and obligations in relation to land, finances and compliance with other Acts of both State and Federal Parliaments.

Macquarie University By-laws

The Macquarie University Act 1989 is supplemented by the By-laws (PDF), which are made by Council and subject to approval from the NSW Minister for Education. By-laws enable authorities and officers to determine the Rules ( made by Council without the need for Ministerial approval) providing for the regulation of any matter with respect to the By-laws.
