Macquarie University offers a range of OHS Training options -

All employees are required to complete the following Health & Safety Induction modules listed below, within their first 4 weeks at Macquarie University:

All employees HEW8 and above must also complete the following module.

Training

Training is an important part of the University’s strategy to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employees. The University offers a wide range of Health and Safety Courses throughout the year. The Training Schedule below is regularly updated with new courses as they are announced.

Course Outlines and Information
First Aid

Senior First Aid Course (and refresher)

An accredited WorkCover NSW course, the certificate provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes deemed necessary for giving competent care to the ill or injured until medical aid arrives.
Assessment of competency is undertaken through informal progressive assessment whilst the course is being undertaken. The examination consists of practical and theory components.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • chain of survival
  • assessing the situation
  • signs of life
  • performing CPR
  • demonstrate use of an automated external defibrillator
  • care of the unconscious person
  • special techniques for children and Infants
  • breathing emergencies including choking and asthma
  • cardiac emergencies
  • severe allergic reaction
  • shock
  • bleeding and wound care
  • burns and scalds
  • extremes of Heat and Cold
  • poisoning
  • altered conscious states
  • bites and stings
  • musculoskeletal injuries
  • infection control
  • reporting procedures

Prerequisite: No previous experience or training is required. Participants should wear loose clothing.

Course Duration: 2 days for Full course and 1 day for the refresher.

Assessment method: Participants are required to pass both the theory and practical sections, including resuscitation.

*Note – if your certification has lapsed, you will need to complete the full course.

Advanced Resuscitation Course

The Advanced Resuscitation course is designed to teach the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain breathing and circulation in an adult, child or infant using various mechanical aids and supplemental oxygen.

Course content:

  • assess the situation and recognise someone requiring Advanced Resuscitation
  • provide oxygen therapy
  • operate suction equipment
  • demonstrate correct use of AED
  • prepare and restore oxygen and AED equipment
  • use of bag and mask device and oxygen equipment
  • provide reports

Prerequisite: The prerequisite for this course is a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Statement of Attainment (within last 12 months).

Course Duration: Minimum three to four hours.

Assessment method: Assessment is ongoing through demonstration of practical skills.

Occupational First Aider (Not open to all staff)

This course provides more advanced knowledge and skills to carry out emergency first aid for injuries and illnesses in the workplace. Occupational First Aiders are responsible for the control and supply of the First Aid Rooms on Campus.

Course content:

  • apply legislation in the workplace
  • manage safety in the workplace
  • recognition of toxic hazards in the workplace
  • care of welfare in the workplace
  • care of first aid facilities
  • completing documentation
  • assessment of a casualty
  • bleeding and wound care
  • administration of medications
  • management of musculoskeletal injuries
  • apply principles of triage
  • identification of confined spaces in the workplace.

Prerequisite: Senior First Aid/Workplace Level 2 Statement of Attainment is a prerequisite for enrolment into this course.

Course Duration: Minimum of thirty hours.

Assessment method: Demonstration of practical skills, role plays, case studies and a written quiz.

First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

The course is designed to provide participants the essential skills and underpinning knowledge necessary to assist a person suffering a severe allergic reaction and anaphylaxis until the arrival of medical assistance.

Course content:

  • assess the situation and identify signs of a person suffering a severe allergic reaction
  • identify hazards to the health and safety of self and others and minimise any risks
  • conduct a Risk Assessment and develop an Action Plan for a person diagnosed as Anaphylactic
  • provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction
  • administration of Adrenaline (Epinephrine) by EpiPen(r)
  • evaluate first aid response to anaphylactic reaction
  • provide reports where applicable

Course Duration: The nominal duration for the course is 3 hours.

Assessment method: Demonstration of practical skills, role plays, case studies and a written quiz.

Occupational Health & Safety

OHS Consultation

This course is a WorkCover NSW mandated course for those interested in serving on an OH&S committee as OH&S Representatives, as outlined in the OH&S Regulation 2001.

Course content:

  • Topic 1: Workplace Health and Safety
  • Topic 2: The Role of OH&S Consultation in the Workplace
  • Topic 3: Effective OH&S Consultation in the Workplace
  • Topic 4: Systematic Management of Health and Safety
  • Topic 5: Action Learning Exercise
  • Topic 6: Continuous Improvement of OHS Systems
  • Topic 7: Summary and Conclusion

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 24 hours over four days.

Assessment method: Ongoing through the course via role plays, case studies, practical exercises, class room discussion.

OHS Committee Chairperson/Convenor Training

The course is designed to provide Committee Chairpersons/Convenors with the skills and certainty in their role, resulting in OHS Committees operates more efficiently & effectively.

Course content:

  • Purpose of OHS Committee's
  • Chairperson's Role in Effective decision making
  • Role of Chairperson
  • How to Prepare an Effective Meeting
  • Problems of Chairpersons Resolving Problems & Handling Others
  • Developing Action Plans
  • How to Chair an Effective Committee Meeting

OHS Consultation Refresher Course

This course is designed to refresh OHS Committee members on their role as committee members, focusing on the key areas of consultation and risk management in their workplace. This course is practical and places an emphasis on the active participation of all course participants. The course is designed for both employee and employer representatives.

Risk Assessment & Control

This course offers an introduction to Risk Assessment within an OHS context and the application of appropriate controls.

  • What is a risk assessment?
  • Risk Assessment Process
  • What is a workplace assessment?
  • Key steps in a workplace assessment
    • Identifying risks
    • Rating a risk
    • Determining the action ranking
    • Determining your controls

Course Duration: 2 hours

Office Based Ergonomics

The aim of this training session is to improve staff awareness of optimal workstation arrangements and work practices, to prevent occurrence of Occupational Overuse Syndrome, and to improve overall office OH&S.

This workshop is recommended for employees who work at a computer workstation and will cover:

  • Principles of optimal posture including the efficient use of the musculoskeletal system
  • Causes of Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS)
  • Principles of OOS prevention
  • Use of a relevant checklist when assessing workstation set-up
  • Workstation furniture adjustment
  • Relevance of stretching in the office environment.

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 2 hours

Manual Handling

This course is designed to cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of manual handling techniques and the prevention of back injury.

The Course will cover the following topics:

  • Identifying risk and hazards in respect to back injuries
  • Identifying strategies to deal with the risks/hazards identified
  • Provide participants with a general understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the back
  • Provide an understanding of the physiological process of musculoskeletal injury
  • Allow participants to develop an understanding of the principles of manual handling both theoretically and practically.

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 2 hours

Safe Work Procedures

This course provides participants will detail information and instruction in preparing and writing Safe Work Procedures. The course will cover:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Identifying risks, hazards and PPE and implementing controls
  • Writing safe work method statements/safe work procedures/ job safety sheets

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 1.5 hours

Assessment Method: Each participant will need to complete a safe work procedure in accordance with University policy.

Stress Management Techniques Seminar

This seminar focuses on addressing stress within the university working environment. It is a highly interactive session which incorporates discussion and practical exercises and is relevant to work and home.

Areas covered include:

  • stress buster activities,
  • beating procrastination,
  • time management and
  • improving personal effectiveness.

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 2 hours

Assessment Method: Nil

OHS Supervisor Training

This course provides information relevant to Supervisors and Managers in relation to their legal obligations under Occupational Health & Safety as well as providing tools and resources to assist them meet these obligations.

The course will cover:

  • OH&S legislation – key chapters including consultation, general duty of care, due diligence and what is 'reasonably practicable';
  • Employer, management, supervisor and employee occupational health & safety responsibilities;
  • The relationship between management system failures and the immediate causes of accidents;
  • Tools to assist in
  • Fines & prosecutions for corporations and individuals

Health & Safety for Academics

This unit has been developed to ensure that academic staff members become familiar with their responsibilities under Occupational Health & Safety. The session will give academics the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and practical application of the health and safety system and the tools and resources available to help you fulfil your health and safety responsibilities.

Topics covered include:

  • OHS Legislation
  • Responsibilities of academics
  • The health and safety risk management approach at Macquarie University
  • Implementing Health & Safety into your courses and fieldwork

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Duration: 1.5 hours

RTW for managers

This course focuses on providing managers & supervisors with relevant information and tools to assist them in managing staff returning from injury or illness.

The course covers the following topics:

  • RTW policy and procedures at Macquarie University.
  • Workers Compensation System & relevant legislation
  • Suitable duties and how to find them
  • What can I do as a manager to support my injured employee
  • Roles of Key stakeholders
  • What to do when things go bad
